SHREWD AS SERPENTS, SIMPLE AS DOVES

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, July 11, 2015:

wisdom 071115

JESUS said to His Apostles:

“Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; SO BE SHREWD AS SERPENTS AND SIMPLE AS DOVES.  But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say.  You will be given at that moment what you are to say.  For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.  BROTHER WILL HAND OVER BROTHER TO DEATH, AND THE FATHER HIS CHILD; CHILDREN WILL RISE UP AGAINST PARENTS AND HAVE THEM PUT TO DEATH.  YOU WILL BE HATED BY ALL BECAUSE OF MY NAME, BUT WHOEVER ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE WILL BE SAVED.  When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.  Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.”

Matthew 10: 16-23

DO NOT JUDGE

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 22, 2015:

wisdom 062215

Jesus said to His disciples:

“STOP JUDGING, THAT YOU MAY NOT BE JUDGED.  FOR AS YOU JUDGE, SO WILL YOU BE JUDGED, AND THE MEASURE WITH WHICH YOU MEASURE WILL BE MEASURED OUT TO YOU.

WHY DO YOU NOTICE THE SPLINTER IN YOUR BROTHER’S EYE, BUT DO NOT PERCEIVE THE WOODEN BEAM IN YOUR OWN EYE?

How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye?

YOU HYPOCRITE, REMOVE THE WOODEN BEAM FROM YOUR EYE FIRST; THEN YOU WILL SEE CLEARLY TO REMOVE THE SPLINTER FROM YOUR BROTHER’S EYE.”

–  From the Gospel of Matthew 7:1-5

+++

Reflections:

*Why do we always notice others mistakes instead of ours?

*Why is it so difficult to admit our own mistakes or wrong doings?

*Why do we take for granted the wooden beams in our eyes before working on others?

Saint of the Day:

St. Thomas More, pray for us.

STORING TREASURES

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 19, 2015:

wisdom 061915b

JESUS said to His disciples:

“DO NOT STORE UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES ON EARTH, WHERE MOTH AND DECAY DESTROY, AND THIEVES BREAK IN AND STEAL.  BUT STORE UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN, WHERE NEITHER MOTH NOR DECAY DESTROY, NOR THIEVES BREAK IN AND STEAL…

FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE ALSO WILL YOUR HEART BE.

The lamp of the body is the eye.  If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness.  And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”

-From the Gospel of Matthew 6: 19-23

+++

Reflections:

*Why are we busy storing riches on earth?

*Have we started storing riches in heaven?

*Where is our heart at present?

+++

Saint of the Day:

St. Juliana Falconieri, pray for us.

BABBLE PRAYERS

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 18, 2015:

wisdom 061815

Jesus said to His disciples:

“In praying, DO NOT BABBLE LIKE THE PAGANS, WHO THINK THAT THEY WILL BE HEARD BECAUSE OF THEIR MANY WORDS.  Do not be like them.  YOUR FATHER KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE YOU ASK HIM.

This is how you are to pray:  ‘OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BY YOUR NAME, THY KINGDOM COME, THY WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN.  GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD; AND FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES, AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US; AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.’

‘If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.  BUT IF YOU DO NOT FORGIVE OTHERS, NEITHER WILL YOUR FATHER FORGIVE YOUR TRANSGRESSIONS.”

– From the Gospel of Matthew 6: 7-15

+++

Reflections:

*How do we pray?

*Do we love long prayers or short prayers?

*Do we still pray this very simple but profound prayer Jesus taught us?

*Have we really forgiven those who tresspassed against us?

WHO ANGERS YOU?

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 11, 2015:

wisdom 061115

Jesus said to His disciples:  “I TELL YOU, UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS SURPASSES THAT OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, YOU WILL NOT ENTER INTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.  But I say to you, WHOEVER IS ANGRY WITH HIS BROTHER WILL BE LIABLE TO JUDGMENT, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa’, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool’, will be liable to fiery Gehenna.

THEREFORE, IF YOU BRING YOUR GIFT TO THE ALTAR, AND THERE RECALL THAT YOU BROTHER HAS ANYTHING AGAINST YOU, LEAVE YOUR GIFT THERE AT THE ALTAR, GO FIRST AND BE RECONCILED WITH YOUR BROTHER, AND THEN COME AND OFFER YOUR GIFT.”

-From the Gospel of Matthew 5:20-26

+++

Reflections:

*Who makes us angry?

*What did he/she do that made us angry?

*Are we willing to be reconciled with him/her before we talk to God?

YOU ARE BLESSED

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 08, 2015:

wisdom 060815

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, His disciples came to Him.  He began to teach them saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.

REJOICE AND BE GLAD, for your reward will be great in heaven.  Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

-From the Gospel of Matthew 5: 1-12

+++

Reflections:

*How can we be blessed?

*Do we deserve to be among the blessed?

*Are we ready to embrace His teachings so we can rejoice and be glad?

WHY ARE YOU TESTING ME?

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, June 03, 2015

wisdom 060315

Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare Him in His speech.

They came and said to Him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion.  You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.  Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?  Should we pay or should we not pay?”

Knowing their hypocrisy He said to them, “WHY ARE YOU TESTING ME?  Bring me a denarius to look at.”

They brought one to Him and He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”  They replied to Him, “Caesar’s.”

So Jesus said to them, “REPAY TO CAESAR WHAT BELONGS TO CAESAR AND TO GOD WHAT BELONGS TO GOD.”

They were utterly amazed at him.

-From the Gospel of Mark 12: 13-17

+++

Reflections:

*Do we faithfully pay our responsibilities as citizens of our country?

*Do we continue to test God in our daily lives?

*Why do we continue to question His wisdom?

Sts. Charles Lwanga and Company, pray for us.

HAVE PITY ON ME

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, May 28, 2015

wisdom 052815

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.

On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, son of David, HAVE PITY ON ME.”  And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.

But he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, HAVE PITY ON ME.”  Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”  So they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.”

HE THREW ASIDE HIS CLOAK, SPRANG UP, AND CAME TO JESUS.

Jesus said to him in reply, “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?”

The blind man replied to him, “MASTER, I WANT TO SEE.”

Jesus told him, “GO YOUR WAY; YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU.”

Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

–  From the Gospel of Mark 10: 46-52

+++

Reflections:

*How strong is our faith in Him?

*Have we ever asked for pity from Him?

*If He asks us, “What do you want me to do for you?”, what is our answer?

THE WAY BACK

Our One Minute Wisdom for Today, May 25, 2015:

wisdom 052515

To the penitent GOD PROVIDES A WAY BACK, He encourages those who are losing hope and has chosen for them the lot of truth.  RETURN TO HIM AND GIVE UP SIN, PRAY TO THE LORD AND MAKE YOUR OFFENSES FEW.

Turn again to the Most High and away from your sin, hate intensely what He loathes, and know the justice and judgments of God, stand firm in the way set before you, in prayer to the the Most High God.

Who in the nether world can glorify the Most High in place of the living who offer their praise? Dwell no longer in the error of the ungodly, but offer your praise before death.  No more can the dead give praise than those who have never lived; you who are alive and well shall praise and glorify God in His mercies.

HOW GREAT THE MERCY OF THE LORD, HIS FORGIVENESS OF THOSE WHO RETURN TO HIM!

-From Sirach 17:20-24

+++

Reflections:

*Are we in the brink of losing hope?  Why not go back to Him.

*Are we losing our lives? Why not call Him back.

*Do we still praise and glorify God?  Give them back to Him.

Saint of the Day:

St. Bede the Venerable, pray for us.

He is waiting for you,
